教宗本笃十六世说：“5月3日，在纽约已召集第八届商讨裁减扩充核武。在解除核武的过程中，必须与肯定迫切需要达成在国际上全面与加快的密切关系。事实上，和平有赖信任与遵守条款的义务，不仅在于势力均衡。藉着这种精神、激励与行动，才能促进解除武器，从核武中释放出来，继而完全在地球上消失。最后，我鼓励在纽约会议的所有参与者，克服过去的制约，从政治与经济的困境中，耐心地缔造和平，以谋求人类的整体发展，为各民族带来真正的希望。”
